HUMS

Definition

Health and Usage Monitoring System.

Description

Originally developed for large twin engine helicopters operating in support of the offshore oil industry, HUMS is now widely used on helicopters to monitor component use. Intended as a post-flight diagnostic tool, HUMS data is collected and recorded from sensors and accelerometers for routine analysis which can help detection of early signs of component failure, particularly within rotor gearboxes.
