Definition
Drizzle is the lightest form of precipitation, consisting of water droplets which are just large enough to acquire a readily measurable terminal velocity which is achieved at an average droplet diameter of 0.4mm.
Description
Drizzle is often generated by Stratus clouds and the presence of drizzle in a weather forecast indicates the likelihood of reduced visibility. Whilst droplets of this size are not a cause of significant airframe icing vigilance is appropriate if the surfaces of an aircraft are below freezing point.
In METARs and TAFs, drizzle is abbreviated to DZ.
